ASMSA Class of 2008 graduates
The 112 members of the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences & the Arts Class of 2008 graduated on May 24 at 2:00PM in the Summit Arena at the Hot Springs Convention Center. Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe gave the keynote address. In all, the Class of 2008 earned more than 12.4 million in scholarship and grant offers. [more] May 2, 2008
Awards presented at Honors Convocation
The ASMSA community gathered on the morning of May 2 for the annual Honors Convocation, to acknowledge special and outstanding achievement in the student body for the academic year. ASMSA Oracle students best in nation, fifth in world
Oracle Corporation recently released the results of its annual data modeling competition in which students submit database design proposals that address a particular problem. This year's problem involved the representation of complex meterological data. The ASMSA team's project was awarded 1st place in the nation, 5th in the world. [more] April 14, 2008
ASMSA professor selected to visit Korea
Ron Luckow, a history professor at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts, is one of just 100 teachers nationwide selected to spend part of the summer studying in Korea. According to the Korean Studies Workshop, roughly 400 people nationwide applied for the 100 spots. Luckow is the only teacher from Arkansas who was selected. [more] March 20, 2008
ASMSA Culture Fair brings the past to life
ASMSA is one of the leading high schools in the country in regards to technology. So why did it feel like the school had stepped nearly 100 years into the past? It's all part of ASMSA's annual Culture Fair activities. Students advance to International Science and Engineering Fair
Two ASMSA seniors earned the school’s highest honor, taking the top two positions in the Science Fair and advancing to the International Science and Engineering Fair. Madhav Shroff of Hot Springs and Summit Pandat of Little Rock, respectively, were the top two finishers in the West Central Regional Science Fair - a region created specifically for ASMSA. ASMSA kicks off Science Fair Week 2008
The West Regional Science Fair, comprised entirely of ASMSA students, kicks off Wednesday on the ASMSA campus. A major research project, which culminates in the Science Fair and Junior Academy of Science competitions, is a graduation requirement at ASMSA. ASMSA senior named finalist in National Achievement Program
ASMSA senior Ashley Hunt has been named a finalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Program, which recognizes outstanding Black American high school students. As a finalist, Hunt is now eligible to compete for one of the approximately 800 Achievement Scholarships, which will be determined later this year. [more] February 7, 2008
Nine ASMSA seniors named National Merit Finalists
Nine ASMSA students have been named National Merit Finalists, and are now eligible to compete for roughly 8,200 National Merit Scholarships, which will be awarded later this year. “We are very proud of these students and the hard work they have done to earn this achievement,” said Melanie Nichols, ASMSA’s Dean of Academic Affairs. ASMSA hosts Teachers Teaching with Technology conference
Nearly 350 educators from Arkansas and neighboring states attended the annual Teachers Teaching with Technology (T3) Regional Conference held at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts the weekend of February 1-2. ASMSA's Doc Film class gives students hands-on experience
In a small second-floor classroom, a group of students are clustered around computers, pointing at the screens, making suggestions, calling out ideas, editing their film projects, smoothing cuts, polishing transitions, and recording voice-overs. Walt Levisee is the Mathematics Department Chair at ASMSA. But students rarely call him Mr. Levisee. Instead, they know him as Teacher Walt, an endearing nickname that fits him perfectly. Teacherwalt.com is an interactive mathematics website featuring Levisee's blog and a math forum where any student - not just ASMSA students - can submit questions. [more] January 10, 2008
ASMSA Student earns Siemens honor
For the second year in a row, a student from ASMSA is a state winner of the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. ASMSA senior Daniel Thompson was chosen for the honor based on his scores on three Advanced Placement (AP) exams in the mathematics and science fields last spring. ASMSA students enjoy "Midnight" Breakfast
While most people are gearing up for the holiday season, this time of year also means final exams for ASMSA students. Though that doesn’t mean there can’t be any relaxing. ASMSA and HSDFI team up for inaugural 5K
The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts has joined forces with the City of Hot Springs and the Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute to make Hot Springs one of the healthiest cities in the state. 10 ASMSA students named National Merit Semifinalists
Ten students were recently named National Merit Semifinalists. These 10 seniors are among the 148 in Arkansas and the roughly 16,000 nationwide who advance to compete for nearly $33 million in Merit Scholarship awards. ASMSA maintains lofty ACT score
Students at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts continue to lead the way in Arkansas education, posting what is believed to be one of the highest average scores in the country. Clinton speaks at ASMSA Commencement
At the graduation ceremony for the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts' Class of 2007, former President Bill Clinton gave the keynote address. The event was held May 26 at the Hot Springs Convention Center. The 88 graduates will attend 44 different colleges and universities, earning more than $9.5 million in scholarship and grant offers. ASMSA students win Stockholm Junior Water Prize
Seniors Kris Staples and Caleb Stovall have been selected to represent the State of Arkansas at the National Stockholm Junior Water Prize Competition (SJWP). They won the honor by researching the theory that as populations increase, so do the levels of lead and potassium in water. They completed their research as part of an 18-month Science Fair project. Instructor wins International Distance Education Teaching Award
The United Stated Distance Learning Association has recognized Natalie Humphreys with a Bronze for Best Practices Award For Distance Learning Teaching, Video Conferencing (K-12). ASMSA instructor chosen for sister city teacher exchange
Ron Luckow, a Humanities instructor at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts, has been chosen to go to Japan this summer as part of a sister city teacher exchange. Every year, the Hot Springs National Park Sister City Foundation selects two Garland County teachers to take part in this exchange. Luckow is scheduled to go to the city of Hanamaki. Nichols named new Dean of Academic Affairs

Inaugural Golf Tournament a success
The inaugural Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts Golf Tournament was a rousing success on Thursday, April 5, as 16 teams competed in a modified four-man scramble. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the ASMSA Foundation. The competition was held at the Balboa Golf Course in Hot Springs Village and the weather couldn’t have been nicer. [more] March 19, 2007
Batesville’s Stinson earning honors at ASMSA
When senior Patrick Stinson was admitted to the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts, he thought he would struggle to keep his head above water. Today, Stinson is doing more than that. He’s a National Merit Finalist and has achieved one of the more unusual distinctions at ASMSA - memorizing 1,020 digits of pi for the school’s annual Pi Day. Eggensperger only Arkansas student to earn AP Siemens Award
Not only is ASMSA senior Caleb Eggensperger one of Google’s most downloaded programmers (or Gadget Developer, as they are known), he is the only student in the state of Arkansas to win the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. Former President of the United States of America William Jefferson Clinton has agreed to serve as the keynote speaker at commencement exercises for the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts' graduating Class of 2007 - the school he helped create. Doctor Patrycja Krakowiak, a biology instructor at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts, has received a $500 mini-grant for creative ideas in the classroom asfter submitting her proposal titled "Interactive Biology." Mathematics instructor earns distinctive honor
Walt Levisee, a mathematics instructor at ASMSA, was recently certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Levisee is the first ASMSA teacher to earn this distinction and only the 15th in the state of Arkansas to earn national certification in the area of Adolescence and Young Adulthood Mathematics. Everyone knows students at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts are academically advanced. But can they sing and dance? Evidently, some of them can. For the first time in school history, the students of ASMSA performed a musical, showcasing their talents in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown. Marc Hosken, a senior at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences & the Arts, has helped develop a drug test that is faster and easier to administer than anything currently on the market. Hugo selected as new ASMSA Director
Former Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Janet Hugo has been named the new Director of the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences & the Arts effective June 12, when she took over the reins from retiring former Director Dr. John Measel. Annual commencement exercises were held on the afternoon of Saturday, May 20 at the Hot Springs Convention Center. Family and friends gathered from across the state to witness the celebration.
