Fundamentals in Research Methods - or FIRM - is designed to teach students about the research process and to apply that research to their own project. In their junior year, students choose from a list of faculty-proposed Science Fair projects or propose one of their own. All research projects are chosen from one of the following categories: behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, botany, chemistry, computer science, earth and space sciences, engineering, environmental science, gerontology, mathematics, medicine and health, microbiology, physics and zoology. Students are assigned to a faculty member who will guide them through the process. In their senior year, students continue to develop their research methods and applications. Students ready themselves for the presentations of their projects at the Science Fair.
