Dempster, Dr. Thomas

Music Instructor

 

Dr. Thomas Dempster is an instructor of music and director of instrumental ensembles at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts. He directs the wind ensemble, teaches music theory, coaches small ensembles, and teaches other music-centered courses.

Originally from Michigan, Dempster grew up in North Carolina, where he attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (Bachelor of Music) and studied music composition and performance. He attended the University of Texas at Austin (Master of Music, Doctor of Musical Arts) to study music composition where he worked with composers Kevin Puts, Russell Pinkston, Donald Grantham, and Dan Welcher.


An internationally-performed, commissioned, published, and award-winning composer, Dempster’s works have been performed in over 30 states and in 14 foreign countries. Dempster is also a bassoonist and has performed with various orchestras throughout the Southeast.

For ten summers, Dempster taught music and philosophy at the Governor’s School of North Carolina. He has served as graduate assistant at the University of Texas, and has held faculty positions at UNC-Greensboro, Claflin University, and South Carolina State University.

During downtime, Dempster enjoys hiking and being outdoors, hanging out with his spouse and their beagle, reading, and making kiln-formed glasswares.
