Computer Science Specialist

The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts (ASMSA), a campus of the University of Arkansas System, invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a twelve-month, full-time opening beginning no later than August 1, 2018.  The computer science specialist will play a critical role in the continued growth of ASMSA’s STEM Pathways digital learning program and Coding Arkansas’ Future initiative.  This is a grant-funded position with support from the Arkansas Department of Education.  Renewal is on an annual basis.

The specialist will design age-appropriate curricular resources aligned with Arkansas' Computer Science standards, plan and deliver face-to-face, blended, and online professional development opportunities for middle as well as secondary teachers, and support ASMSA's spectrum of Computer Science initiatives by planning and coordinating workshops and special events.  The specialist will collaborate with other ADE support personnel on computer science professional development programs.

In brief, ASMSA is tasked with providing extraordinary opportunities for a diverse group of students. Established by the General Assembly in 1991 as a public, residential high school to serve talented and motivated Arkansas juniors and seniors from throughout the state as a school of choice, ASMSA—located in historic downtown Hot Springs and adjacent to Hot Springs National Park—is one of only 16 public, residential high schools in the United States focusing on advanced educational experiences in science, technology, engineering and mathematics as well as the arts. ASMSA offers more than 50 courses for college credit, and all graduates earn an average of 50 hours of college credit while finishing high school.  Graduates achieve an average ACT composite score of 30.  Newsweek, The Daily Beast, and The Washington Post have ranked ASMSA among the nation’s Top 25 high schools over the past five years. 

A bachelor’s degree in computer science, mathematics, education or a related area as well as competency in contemporary programming languages are required, though a Master’s degree is greatly preferred. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in working with gifted students, supporting their peers in professional development, teaching through technology, developing interdisciplinary curriculum, team planning skills, and problem solving skills. Experience using and/or teaching advanced computing topics such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and cyber security is preferred.

As a residential community of learning, ASMSA’s core philosophy values the development of students’ interests and talents beyond the classroom.  As such, faculty are expected to support student research, provide tutoring assistance, facilitate successful transitions for incoming juniors, promote the school through outreach programs, and contribute to the residential experience.
