Nine ASMSA students named National Merit Scholarship Finalists

Nine students at the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts have been named National Merit Scholarship Finalists for 2013.

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. made the announcement in a letter to the school on Jan. 31.

ASMSA students named as National Merit Scholarship Finalists are:

Clay Davis of Hot Springs, son of Doris and Will Davis;

Casey Gibson of Jonesboro, daughter of Dr. Cynthia Ann Miller and George Henry Gibson Jr.;

Andrew Gu of Little Rock, son of Li Huang and Qiang Gu;

Wilson Guillory of Eureka Springs, son of Jessica and Daren Guillory;

Lauren E. Jackson of Redfield, daughter of Patsy and I. Travis (Jackie) Jackson;

Ryan Mallaby of Benton, son of Nikki and George Mallaby;

Erik Monson of Hot Springs, son of Karla and Brian Monson;

Amelia Norvell of Prairie Grove, daughter of Marsha and Ronald Norvell; and

Guo Wang of Blytheville, son of Hong Jiang and Yanwen Wang.

“Becoming a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship is a great achievement,” said Dr. Janice Sullivan, dean of academic affairs at ASMSA. “We are very proud of the accomplishments of these nine very talented students.

“Each of them represents the mission and values of ASMSA. These outstanding young men and women have made a commitment to themselves and to society. This is a great triumph for our institution and the state of Arkansas.”

Scholarship winners will be announced in April, May and July. The National Merit Scholarship Corp., in partnership approximately 440 business organizations and institutions of higher education, will award more than 8,300 National Merit Scholarships with a value of more than $32 million, according to the organization’s website.
