ASMSA Quiz Bowl team to compete for state title

The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts Quiz Bowl team will compete for the Class 7A state title in the annual Arkansas Governor’s Academic Competition on April 20.

The Arkansas Educational Television Network will air ASMSA’s match against Fort Smith Southside in “Arkansas Quiz Bowl 2013.” Matches are set to begin airing on AETN at 9 a.m. ASMSA’s match is tentatively set for 10:30 a.m. There are two matches scheduled before ASMSA’s match, including the Class 2A match between Conway Christian and Cedar Ridge immediately before. Matches typically last 45 minutes, but could end early.

Quiz Bowl team members include senior Alex Shell of Benton, captain; senior Brady Rowe of Hot Springs; junior Dylan Johnson of Redfield; junior Russell Bryan of Conway; and junior Ariel Sorg of Bauxite.

This is the second year in a row ASMSA will be playing for the state title. ASMSA defeated Conway for the Class 7A title last year.

The public is invited to be part of the audience at the AETN studios at 350 S. Donaghey in Conway, and will be seated on a first-come, first-served basis. Spectators should arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. for the morning matches and will be admitted via the Sesasme Street entrance.

The Arkansas Governor’s Quiz Bowl Association holds regional tournaments around the state during March. Teams are assigned to a site, and a random drawing places teams on the pairing schedule, according a press release from AETN. A percentage of the teams in the regional tournament advance to the state tournament. The top two teams from each classification advance to the finals.
