Smith of Wynne is the son of Phil Smith and Carol and Ralph Patterson, all of Wynne.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program is a privately financed academic competition that operates without government assistance under the guidance of the National Merit Scholarship Corp. It was initiated in 1964 to recognize academically promising black students throughout the nation and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding program participants.

Approximately 800 Achievement Scholarship awards worth about $2.5 million will be offered next spring. More than 1,600 black American high school seniors have been designated Semifinalists from the more than 160,000 students who requested to be considered for the program when they took the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as juniors.

To advance to the Finalist level in the competition, Semifinalists and their school must submit a detailed application with information about the student’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.
