ASMSA students earn state Beta Club awards

Several Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts students earned recognition at the Arkansas Beta Club Senior Convention held Jan. 30-31 at the Hot Springs Convention Center.

Sophia Ly, a senior from Jonesboro, won first place in the Math Division II contest. Ly is the daughter of Lynn and Dr. Phuong Ly.

The ASMSA team won first place in the Character Skit category. Team members included senior Jakyra Scaife of Marion, daughter of LaShica and Chuck Scaife; senior Maya Fleming-Vincent of Barton, daughter of  Cassandra Thomas-Vincent and Stanley Vincent of Barton and Delaney Fleming of Buda, Texas; senior Brooke Blackwell of Hope, daughter of Karen and Blake Blackwell; senior Jordan Thompson of Hazen, son of Janae and Todd Thompson; junior Gunnar George of Jonesboro, the son of Karen and Greg George; junior Monish Shukla of White Hall, son of Manoj and Namarta Mishra; and senior Erin Baker of Leslie, daughter of Debbie and Tim Melser of Leslie and Marcus and Crystal Baker of Fort Smith.

The awards qualified the students to compete in the National Beta Club Senior Convention Competition. The National Beta Club convention will be held June 29-July 2 in Nashville, Tenn.
