Students place first in Programming Contest

Students from Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts participated in the 2011 University of Arkansas High School Programming Contest on March 12 at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. The contest is hosted by the Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering and sponsored by the student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery and by Acxiom.

ASMSA’s =PI() team placed first by solving seven of eight programming challenges. Team members were Sawyer Anderson, Stephen Hu, Calvin MacKenzie and Alec Crow.

Placing third was ASMSA’s “Team Rocket,” which solved five of the eight challenges. Team members were Scott Glover, Arnab Dey and Skittles Smith.

ASMSA students Hunter Dunne, Becky Rainwater, Doug Dorle made up “The Underdogs” team and received the Most Creative Solution award. They used an elegant equation to solve one of the challenges when all the other teams used an iterative simulation.
