Medlock receives scholarship to study in Germany

Ryan Medlock, a senior at ASMSA, has been awarded a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals scholarship.

Each year CBYX awards 75 American students scholarships for a full-year work-study program that provides an understanding of everyday life, education, and professional training in Germany.

Beginning in July, Ryan will receive two months of intensive German language training in Germany and four months of classroom instruction at a German university or college of applied sciences. He will then complete a five-month internship in a German-speaking environment. Ryan said he plans to apply for an internship that will allow him to continue his research on neuroimmunology, specifically multiple sclerosis. Before beginning his senior year at ASMSA, Ryan spent part of his summer vacation conducting research with Dr. Lawrence Steinman at Stanford University.

Following his internship, Ryan will begin his studies at Vanderbilt University, where he plans to major in molecular and cellular biology and minor in philosophy.

The CBYX for Young Professionals program is intended primarily for young adults in business, vocational, scientific, engineering, technical, and agricultural fields. The scholarship award includes a round-trip transatlantic flight, university tuition, language training, a living stipend, program-related travel costs in Germany, health and accident insurance, accommodation in a German home or student residence, seminars in Washington, D.C., New York City, and various German cities, as well as lifetime membership in the CBYX Alumni Network.

Ryan is the son of Todd and Carole Medlock of Dyer.
