Former dean establishes scholarship for math students

Melanie Nichols, the former dean of the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts, has established a scholarship for mathematics students planning to attend a four-year college or university.

Nichols, who retired last summer, was one of the first teachers hired for the Arkansas School for Mathematics and Sciences in 1992. After 14 years of serving as the chairman of the mathematics department, Nichols was named dean of academic affairs and served in that position four years.

Nichols understands the importance of scholarships for ASMSA students as they further their education. Many of the students come from low- to middle-income families and without scholarships they would not be able to attend college.

Members of the mathematics department will select the scholarship recipient each year. To be eligible, the student:

Must be a senior enrolled in an ASMSA Advanced Placement AB Calculus Course;

Must have demonstrated a passion for calculus by earning A’s and/or B’s for each grading period in the Advanced Placed AB Calculus course;

Must have demonstrated good citizenship and responsibility throughout his/her ASMSA academic career;

Must be accepted to attend a four-year college or university.

Donations to the Melanie Nichols ASMSA Academic Scholarship can be sent to the ASMSA Foundation, 200 Whittington Ave., Hot Springs, AR 71913. Please write on the memo line the donation is for the Melanie Nichols Scholarship.
