Concert in memory of ASMSA alumnus benefits Literacy Council

The mother of ASMSA alumnus Alex Johnson is organizing a concert and silent auction to benefit the Mississippi County Literacy Council.

Johnson graduated from Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts in 2005 and was killed in a car accident in October 2009.

“Alex felt his time at ASMSA was some of the best in his life,” said Johnson’s mother, Denise. “I wanted to honor him and some of the things that were important to him: education, the arts and helping others.”

Alex was a tutor at Northeastern Arkansas College and volunteered with the Mississippi County Literacy Council. “He believed if people could learn to read or improve their reading skills, it would not only benefit them as individuals, it would also benefit the community,” said Johnson.

The Alex Johnson Memorial Concert and Silent Art Auction will be held Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Ritz Civic Center in Blytheville. The Silent Auction and Reception will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and will feature Lincoln Layne, JoJo Jeffries and The Reba Russell Band.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets may be purchased in advance at The Ritz Civic Center, the Osceola and Blytheville Public Libraries or by contacting the Mississippi County Literacy Council at 870-763-0032.

Anyone wanting to contribute, but who cannot attend the concert, may make a donation to Alex Johnson Memorial Fund, c/o Mississippi County Literacy Council, P.O. Box 682, Blytheville AR 72316.
