The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts is a public residential high school for academically advanced juniors and seniors. Students traditionally apply in their sophomore year for their final two years in school. Below are the guidelines applicants should follow when applying for admission to ASMSA.
All applicants must:
- Be a resident of the state of Arkansas.
- Be a current 10th grade student who has a minimum of ten (10) Carnegie units of study upon completion of the 10th grade – (this must include two (2) English, two (2) mathematics, and two (2) science). All applicants must have completed Algebra I and have completed or be enrolled in Geometry or Algebra II.
- Submit an ACT or SAT test score and an additional standardized test score (for example: PLAN, PSAT, Stanford 9, etc). Test data should not be more than two years old. Your application will NOT be reviewed unless you have an ACT or SAT score.
- Submit the results from your Algebra I Proficiency Exam, as well as the results from your Geometry Proficiency Exam (if available).
- Have a minimum overall, unweighted G.P.A. of 3.25 from your current school or proof of the equivalent if home schooled.
- Submit transcripts from 9th and 10th grades (courses taken and grades received).
- Indicate high motivation and academic achievement that warrants a more challenging and diversified curriculum in the junior and senior years.
- Complete all student questions within the application.
- Submit three (3) letters of recommendation. These recommendations should come from a current or recent (within the last two school years) mathematics teacher, science teacher, and English teacher. When submitting recommendations, please provide the teacher/counselor with a stamped envelope with ASMSA’s address on the envelope so the teacher can mail in the recommendation separately from the rest of the application.
- Attend a personal interview.
Students wishing to take part in our early application phase must:
- Submit ALL application materials, including an ACT or SAT standardized test score, no later than February 1. All applications received after that will go to the general application pool.
- Visit the school as a shadow before February 1 and attend an interview weekend. Failing to go through the on-campus interview disqualifies a student from participating in the early application phase. If a student is not chosen for early admission, that student will enter the general admission pool and be reviewed with the rest of the applicants after the March 1 deadline. Remember, if you are not admitted in the early admissions cycle, it does not necessarily mean you will not be admitted to ASMSA at all.
