Like many spring breakers, a group of ASMSA students headed south to the beach for their vacation. But, their itinerary didn’t include tanning, swimming and partying. They were going to spend their time studying marine life and habitats on the Gulf Coast. And, for some, it would be the first time they had ever seen the ocean.

University of Arkansas System President Dr. Donald R. Bobbitt will recommend Corey Alderdice, assistant director for admissions and public relations at the Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Bowling Green, Ky., to be the new director of the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts.

Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts commencement will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 26 at Summit Arena in the Hot Springs Convention Center. James McKinney, a 2007 graduate of ASMSA, will present the commencement address.

Twenty-one students from Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts were selected to attend Arkansas Governor’s School, which will be held June 10 – July 7 at Hendrix College in Conway.

Two ASMSA alumni, Brett Clark (2009) and Natasha Sra (2011), are featured in a video about the new Nanotechnology Sciences Center, which opened May 2 on the UALR campus. The center provides research facilities for scientists and students to explore the interface between nanomaterials, plant biology, and mammalian biology.

Three ASMSA seniors were recently honored for their academic achievements.

After a nationwide search, three people were selected as finalists for the director’s position at Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts.
