Three Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts seniors earned 2014-15 National Hispanic Recognition Program honors.
The College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program honors about 5,000 academically outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students who are among the highest-scoring students on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
ASMSA seniors who were recognized were:
• Deisy Abarca of Hope, daughter of Rosie and Jason Wood;
• Alex Garza of Russellville, son of Sheryl and David Garza; and
• Nina Valdes of Griffithville, daughter of Ann and Pete Valdes.
To be eligible for the honor, students must meet several requirements, including:
• Take the PSAT/NMSQT in October of their junior year in high school;
• Be of at least one-quarter Hispanic/Latino descent;
• Achieve the minimum required PSAT/NMSQT cutoff score, which may vary by state, region and territory each year; and
• Achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher by the end of junior year.
Receiving a program award is an important academic recognition as students prepare their college applications. Honorees are chosen from the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, the Mariana Islands and the Marshall Islands as well as U.S. citizens attending schools abroad.
