ASMSA alumnae named Goldwater Scholars

Two Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts alumnae have been selected as 2020 Goldwater Scholars.

Rebecca Parham of the Class of 2017 and Sabrina Jones of the Class of 2018 were recognized by the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation as a recipient of this year’s scholarships.

The foundation was established by Congress in 1986 to serve as a living memorial to honor the lifetime work of Sen. Barry Goldwater. Scholarships are provided to college sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue research careers in natural sciences, mathematics and engineering.

Jones attends the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where she is studying physics and astronomy. Her career goals include earning a medical degree and a Ph.D. focusing on neuroscience leading to performing clinical neuroscience research at a medical research institution.

Parham attends Hendrix College in Conway where she is studying chemistry. Her career goals include earning a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry leading to conducting research in atmospheric, environmental chemistry while teaching at the university level.

Jones and Parham were two of only three Arkansas natives selected as a 2020 Goldwater Scholar. They were selected from a pool of more than 5,000 college sophomores and juniors who were nominated by their academic institutions.
