Four members of the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts students earned medals at the recent Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association’s annual State Solo and Ensemble Assessment.
Jessica Maruri, a senior from Van Buren, performed the first movement, “he Melancolique,” from “Deux Pieces pour Flute Seule, Opus 69” by Laszlo Lajtha on the flute. She earned a medal for a superior performance for her performance.
Maruri earned a second medal for superior performance for her piccolo performance of “Hungarian Serenade” by Victorin Joncieres. ASMSA band director Mary A. Chambers accompanied her on the piano.
Junior Jett McCullough from Salem received a medal for superior performance for his French horn performance of “Elegie” by Rolf Scheruer. Chambers accompanied his solo.
Junior Joseph Filipek of Bismarck performed an unaccompanied snare drum solo, “Drum Corps on Parade” by John S. “Jack” Pratt. He received a medal for superior performance.
Junior Ashley Kennedy of Hot Springs earned a medal for an excellent performance for her performance of Robert Schumann’s “Fantasy-Piece No. 1, Opus 73” on the clarinet. Chambers accompanied her on the piano.
The competition was held May 2 at Dover High School. In order to qualify for the state solo and ensemble competition, the students had to select an advanced piece from a prescribed list and make a superior rating at region solo and ensemble in April. Only students who receive a superior rating at region qualify for the state competition.
