Several Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts students earned recognition at recent regional jazz band and orchestra competitions.
Four members of the ASMSA’s band earned ASBOA Region II All-Region Senior Jazz Band recognition during the regional competition held on Dec. 4 at Lake Hamilton High School in Royal. The students qualified to participate in the All-Region Jazz Clinic which was held Jan. 7-8 at Lakeside High School in Hot Springs and to audition for the All-State Jazz Band on Feb. 4.
All-Region Jazz Band qualifiers included:
- Nathan Robinson, a senior from Hot Springs Village, first chair alto saxophone;
- Jace Dunlap, a senior from Jefferson, fourth chair trumpet;
- Courtland Callis, a junior from Alexander, fifth chair trumpet; and
- Zephyr Smith, a junior from Hot Springs, first chair piano.
Three students were named alternates for the Region II All-Region Jazz Band. They were:
- Kacie Koen, a junior from Benton, tenor saxophone;
- Buckley Harrison, a junior from West Memphis, baritone saxophone; and
- Curren French, a senior from Hardy, guitar.
The ASBOA South Region Honor Orchestra auditions were held Oct. 28. Amanda Navarro, a junior from Hot Springs, was placed into Second Section Violin. That allowed her to participate in the South Region Honor Orchestra Clinic held on Nov. 12-13 at Mills High School in Little Rock. It also qualified Navarro to audition for All-State Symphony Orchestra, which will be held Feb. 5 at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro.
Two students were selected as first alternates for the South Region Honor Orchestra. Daniel Lee, a sophomore from Russellville was selected as an alternate for cello, and Courtland Callis, a junior from Alexander, was an alternate for horn in F.
