ASMSA students earn summer research fellowships

The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts recently announced the awardees for several summer research fellowships designated for students.

The summer fellowships provide funds to allow students to conduct summer research for various school projects. Students must be rising seniors at ASMSA. The awards were announced during the ASMSA Honors Day Convocation held on May 20.

The following students earned recognition:

• Sydney Hazeslip of Cabot received the ASMSA Trustees’ Service Fellowship for $600. It is awarded to a rising senior who plans to conduct a summer service learning project of value to both their home town or school and ASMSA.

• Haven Whitney of Searcy received the Computer Science Summer Research Fellowship. It is awarded to a rising senior who plans to participate in a summer computer science learning experience. The award is $600.

• Victoria Hwang of Maumelle and Sarah Balenko of Russellville each received a $600 Murphy USA Summer Research Fellowship. It is awarded by the Murphy USA Foundation to rising seniors who plan to conduct summer research to complete a capstone project or International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) project.

• Salim Al-Tamimi of Jacksonville received the Dan Fredinburg Fellowship for Innovation and Technology Commercialization. The $600 award is given to a rising senior for purpose of developing a new viable business venture or commercialization of an innovative application of technology. This is the first year this fellowship was awarded. It is named in honor of Class of 1999 alumnus Dan Fredinburg who was a Google executive at the time of his death while climbing Mount Everest in April 2015.

• Eilene Pearson Hartford of received the Alderdice Family Summer Arts Fellowship provides a rising senior with assistance to complete an art portfolio or capstone project. It is the first year the $250 fellowship has been awarded.
