Several Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts students were recently recognized as recipients of the National African American Recognition Award by the College Board.
Six ASMSA students were recognized for the first time with the award this year. They include:
- Kaira Harper of Jonesboro;
- Trenton Noel of Little Rock;
- Beatrice Nkunga of Sherwood;
- Chelsea Nwankwo of Alexander;
- Alyssa Thomas of El Dorado; and
- Jaden Williams of Fort Smith.
Two students earned the award at their sending school before attending ASMSA — Ai’Yanna Tombs of North Little Rock and Daniel Nkunga of Sherwood. Tombs was notified that she received the award again this year, but College Board only officially publicizes the student’s first achievement.
The National African American Recognition Award is presented by the College Board to underrepresented students who have excelled in their classrooms by earning a 3.5 GPA as well as on the organization’s assessments such as the PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10 and Advanced Placement exams. College Board is a not-for-profit organization that connects students with colleges and universities.
Eligible students are invited to apply during their sophomore or junior year and are awarded the beginning of the next school year. They may include the award on college and scholarship applications.
