Students earn recognition at Model Arab League competition

Students from the Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences and the Arts earned recognition at the Arkansas High School Model Arab League held recently at the University of Central Arkansas.

More than 150 students from 10 high schools participated in the conference held March 10-11 at the university’s campus in Conway. The event was hosted by UCA’s Department of Political Science and Model United Nations student organization. Students represented 22 member-states and several observer states in the League of Arab States during the conference.

Sixteen ASMSA students attended the conference. It was the first time ASMSA has participated in the event.

Among the awards announced was a Distinguished Delegation Award for the Oman delegation, which included ASMSA students Kacie Koen of Benton, Izzy Funes of Conway, Lola Tate of Benton and Michaela Stevens of Hot Springs. ASMSA students also served as delegation representatives for Chad and India.

Several individual awards were also announced. They included:

  • Outstanding Delegate for the Joint Defense Council: Kacie Koen of Benton representing Oman;
  • Chair’s Choice for the Council on Palestinian Affairs: Izzy Funes of Conway representing Oman;
  • Chair’s Choice for the Council on Political Affairs: Greg Cochran of Russellville representing Chad; and
  • Chair’s Choice for the Council of Arab Social Affairs Ministers: Pixie Rodgers of Hot Springs representing Chad.
